Police are investigating a blaze at a flat at York St John which has left four dead including a child and a total of 18 people injured, according to paramedics. 

The blaze which started around 9:30 was attended to be police, firefighters and paramedics.  

Inspector Dobson Fisher stated that there was a 999 call at 9:35 informing emergency services of the fire and confirmed that this was being treated as a criminal investigation. 

Operator commander Sam Austin of Yorkshire ambulance confirmed four people have died and 18 more were injured with three being in a “serious condition” and have been taken to York Hospital.  

Most of the injuries that occurred were head injuries, burns and respiratory problems which were tended to on scene by the 12 paramedics who were on scene.  

Amongst those deceased was at least one child Sam Austin confirmed. Paramedics gave CPR at the scene as they attempted to resuscitate victims.  

The cause of the fire is still unknown but residents will be unable to return to their homes for at least two days whilst police check the condition of the property after the blaze Fisher said.  

One person has been arrested as the criminal investigation continues.  

Inspector Dobson Fisher of North Yorkshire Police said: “This part of the city is a busy area with a lot of traffic. If any witnesses have walked past in the area in the past few weeks, we would like to speak to you if you have seen anything out of the ordinary. If you have seen anything, please contact Crimestoppers.” The police investigation at the scene is expected to last for two days.
