North Yorkshire has been found to have the lowest rate of catalytic convertor thefts in the country.  

Catalytic convertor theft is when a criminal steals the catalytic convertor off of a exhaust and sell those parts for scrap metal. 

Police have warned that the most common vehicles targeted by criminals are 4x4s as they have exhausts that are easily accessible and contain more valuable materials.  

Sky news carried out a study that found over the last three years 97,023 thefts of catalytic convertors which is a rate of 89 stolen per day.  

Sky also found that 75 were stolen per day in 2022 and in North Yorkshire across the full year just 16 thefts were reported leading North Yorkshire to be well below the national average of 75 per day with North Yorkshire having an average of just 0.04 thefts per day.  

The rate of thefts in North Yorkshire works out at 4.43 per 100,000 households, which finishes as the best national average ahead of Cumbria in second with 6.61 per 100,000 households.

There were just 16 recorded thefts in York in 2022 which is an average of 4.43 per 100,000 households finishing first in the country with Cumbria coming second with an average of 6.61 per 100,000 households.
