Todays look through the archives of United’s history takes us to the League Cup and more importantly the 2014 fourth round as the Toon knocked out holders Manchester City by 2 goals to nil.
The first chance of the evening fell City’s way as Ryan Taylor – starting in midfield – pulled back the Spanish magician David Silva and City were awarded a free kick. The set piece was struck by Ivorian powerhouse Yaya Toure but the effort curled safely over Rob Elliot’s goal.
And a waste from Toure it was as the mags made them pay racing up the other end and scoring the first goal of the game.
Ryan Taylor challenged Fernandinho in midfield and the ball broke free to England U20s winger Rolando Aarons who seized upon the loose ball down the right hand side before firing a low angled shot into the far corner of Caballero’s goal to silence the 37,000 City fans and to send 3,000 Geordies into raptures.
Spurred on after scoring United went in search of a second. Ryan Taylor, who had been out for 26 months with consecutive cruciate ligament injuries, tried his luck with a free kick but failed to beat the wall.
A chance came for the Sky Blues of Manchester as a ball was met by Jovetic at the back post and only a clawing effort by the former Charlton stopper Elliot kept the visitors advantage intact.
Janmaat then hit a fierce rising drive that stung the gloves of City’s Argentine stopper before Coloccini saw his own clearance hit the Newcastle woodwork trying to clear Aleksandar Kolarov’s cross.
Dummett had a massive chance on the 32 minute mark as he met Taylor’s cross unmarked at the back post but he could only volley straight at Caballero from five yards out.
Toure and Mangala both had chances for the hosts before the break, with both failing to find the target before United youngster Adam Armstrong had his sliding effort wide of the upright, before the ref blew for half time: advantage Newcastle.
Sammy Ameobi came on for goalscorer Rolando Aarons at half time, and City came out of the interval flying on all four cylinders.
Kolarov whipped an exquisite cross into the mixer which just need a touch to level the game, but an excellent piece of defending by local lad Paul Dummett made sure that Jovetic’s strike was blocked.
On the hour mark, Newcastle gaffer Alan Pardew made his final two changes of the contest, bringing on Frenchmen Moussa Sissoko and Emmanuel Riviere in place of Janmaat and Armstrong with Ryan Taylor moving into right back to replace the Dutchman and Sissoko taking his place in midfield.
And straight after referee Stuart Attwell waived away claims of a penalty for the Toon. Obertan was released into the area and Kolarov went through the back of him with a sliding challenge that looked a clear penalty to all but claims were waived away by the referee.
It took less than 15 minutes for United to turn their anger to jubilation as Sissoko doubled their advantage. The substitute picked up the ball on the edge of the area, and with little options he chose to bulldoze his way through the City defence before prodding a superb effort past Willy Caballero.
The Etihad fell silent and City started committing every man forward in hopes of a goal or two to draw them level and when the ball fell to Dzeko at the back post it looked like a certain goal and a nervy end to the game…
…but no! Ryan Taylor heroically got himself in the way to block the Bosnian’s effort in a matter that summed up the evening for Pardew’s men; a never say die attitude and ultimately a quarter finals trip to London to face Tottenham.
