In a season where 5000-1 outsiders Leicester City were winning the title, Newcastle were having a poor season the culminated in the Toon being relegated, but we didn’t go out without a bang.
Already relegated Newcastle came into a match against 3rd place Tottenham with everyone anticipating a drubbing in favour of the Lilywhites but the opposite was to occur over 90 minutes. Spurs started the game with a few tame efforts before Newcastle started piling on the pressure, and Gini Wijnaldum opened the scoring.
A Janmaat cross fell to Moussa Sissoko at the back post and his square ball found Mitrovic who laid the ball off perfectly to the Dutch International whose finish was inch perfect, nestling within Lloris’ left-hand post to send St James’ into raptures.
Twenty minutes later it was two with Mitrovic getting his second goal contribution. Sissoko centred the ball and the big Serbian guided his header past Lloris and into the back of the net to double the Geordie’s advantage.
Pochettino made two changes at the interim bringing on Josh Onomah and Tom Carroll for Heung-Min Son and Ryan Mason.
Eric Dier then had a shot that looked to be heading in before Paul Dummett threw himself in the way to divert the effort wide.
Christian Eriksen saw his free kick fail to beat the wall and Colback intervened as Lamela poised to shoot but the Argentine would get his goal.
Lamela struck from a tight angle which beat United stopper Darlow via the underside of the bar to give Spurs hope and to allow them back into the game.
A few minutes later Darlow once again had to be alert with Onomah trying his luck but Darlow held his low drive.
Aleksandar Mitrovic was then shown a straight red for a nasty challenge on England International Kyle Walker but United weren’t going to lie down with ten men.
Sissoko raced down the left before cutting inside and being brought down by Eriksen and Newcastle had a penalty. Wijnaldum stepped up and sent Lloris the wrong way and grab his second to send the Gallowgate into raptures.
Wijnaldum was brought off by Benitez, signifying his last appearance in Black n white with youngster Rolando Aarons brought on for him.
Aarons had an immediate impact creating a chance for Sissoko whose curling effort was turned over the bar by Lloris .
The game entered the final ten minutes at 3-1 but two more goals were yet to come.
Townsend thumped the woodwork with an effort before Rolando Aarons turned the ball into the back of the net at the far post to net his first home goal of the season, and then he turned provider.
Spurs surged forward trying to find a goal of their own but Aarons broke away with the ball and fed the overlapping Daryl Janmaat and the Dutch international in his final Newcastle appearance lashed the effort across Lloris into the bottom left corner to leave fans across the nation scratching their eyes as Newcastle beat 3rd place Spurs 5-1.
